“We focus on delivering exceptional master crafted
cellos and bows
at a fair price.”
Mirjam Daalmans
Founder of the Artisan Cello Gallery
It is your talent and the right instrument that will help you leave an indelible mark on the music of tomorrow.
A good cello helps you as a cellist to improve your technique and musicality in a natural and self-discovering way.
We offer comprehensive support in your search for the instrument of your choice. We love to help you shape your musical future.
Listening to you may be our most important quality. We would love to hear the personal story of your history with the cello. Of course also your plans for the future. But above all, we like to dwell with you on the here-and-now.
- How is your playing technique?
- What characterizes your personal style?
- What is your favorite repertoire?
- Do you prefer to play solo or in an ensemble?
- What kind of cello do you play now and what do you like about it?
- And what makes that this cello no longer completely suits you?
And the most important question for us is:
- What should distinguish your cello from all other cellos?
This we would like to discuss with you!
We do this with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. We understand that when you are looking for your ideal instrument, everything has to be right.
Our collection
With modern techniques, there is no reason to assume that a contemporary cello would be any less good than a cello from 1700. And this is something you really have to experience.
Our wide collection includes both old (vintage) and new (contemporary) cellos and bows. The Artisan Cello Gallery specializes in a fine selection in the €10,000 to €30,000 + price range.
Are you looking for a good, but cheaper cello?

FAQs
What makes a musical instrument valuable and a worthy investment?
At the Artisan Cello Gallery, we have many investment-worthy cellos available at reasonable prices. We regularly acquire exceptional rare or otherwise high-quality instruments. But how can you be sure you are using your money wisely?
If you buy a unique and high-quality cello, you can assume that if you maintain the instrument properly, its value will rise with inflation and possibly even higher. Of course, whether the latter happens depends in part on factors such as the luthier’s name and reputation and production. Truly rare musical instruments are extremely valuable because there is a finite supply available. Instruments with previous owners who were famous or otherwise notable may also fetch a higher price.
The quality of an instrument itself can also affect its value. Antique cellos in particular can be in poor condition. This is why we make sure that each cello has been appraised by a qualified appraiser to have its value estimated. We also try to find out with each cello what else is known about its history and construction.
Can I come and compare several cellos?
Yes you can. You are welcome to make an appointment and visit us to compare multiple cellos and bows. We have two rooms for that purpose. In the chapel you will have somewhat larger acoustics, similar to a small concert hall. In the music room, you have smaller acoustics, similar to those in a living room, for example.
Cellist Mirjam Daalmans will be present to assist you with comparing cellos and bows. If you want, she can also play the instruments and bows for you, so you can compare in a different way. Most cellists enjoy both playing themselves and also hearing a little how a fellow musician works with the instrument and/or bow.
In this way we hope that you can form a good opinion about the cellos and bows in our collection.
Can I bring my cello teacher to the appointment?
Of course, your teacher is also welcome. A great advantage of this is that you can also consider his or her judgment in your decision.
Do all instruments and bows offered for sale in the Artisan Cello Gallery actually belong to you?
No. Some cellos and bows are ours and some we sell on a consignment basis for third parties. Sometimes these are professional cellists who retire or cellists who want to progress to an even better-suited instrument, sometimes collectors who want to sell part of their collection and sometimes instruments and bows are offered to us by the heirs of cellists who have passed away.
If I buy a cello or bow that needs some improvement, can you take care of that too?
Yes, we can take care of that. We have good cooperative relationships with several violin makers and bow makers in the Netherlands and abroad. In such a case, we can arrange maintenance and/or restoration for you or we can refer you to skilled craftsmen who can take care of this for you.
The cellos and bows you see here in the Artisan Cello Gallery collection are basically offered and priced ‘as is’. An additional charge therefore applies for additional restoration work. If possible, we will try to have instruments and bows checked by the original builder or restorer before presentation in the gallery. And in the case of new instruments from European builders we make sure that this is always the case.
Can I also take a cello and/or bow home on a trial basis?
Yes, this is possible with most cellos and bows in our collection, under certain conditions.
- First, you identify yourself and we will make a copy of your ID (passport, ID card or driver’s license). The copy will be returned to you or destroyed when you return the goods in good condition.
- You will also receive a loan agreement, signed by a representative of the Artisan Cello Gallery and you.
- In addition, you pay a deposit which we will use to insure the instrument or bow for the period that it is in your care. This deposit is paid before you take the instrument or bow with you. You will get this deposit back if you decide to buy the cello or bow. If you decide not to buy the cello or bow, you will receive the deposit back minus the insurance cost for the period you borrowed the goods.
If the instrument or bow is damaged during the time you borrow it from us, the deposit will not be refunded.
Since, when lending or renting an instrument or bow, a loss, theft or otherwise becoming completely lost cannot be insured, this damage will be recovered from you, which means that you are thereby obligated to purchase.
Thus, borrowing an instrument or bow is not entirely without risk. We feel it is important that you know this before you borrow anything from us. In the vast majority of cases, the loan of instruments and bows goes without a hitch. But we like to have certainty, in case things go differently than expected. We hope you will understand this.
