4/4 cello (poplar), Sergio Scaramelli, 2019 Ferrara Italy

Sergio Scaramelli, Ferrara Italy

Sergio Scaramelli

This cello is built by Italian master-luthier Sergio Scaramelli in 2019.

This instrument is built to Ettore Soffritti’s model. The oil-based lacquer gives a brilliant red-brown sheen to the old sound wood.

Poplar is used for the ribs and the back and the way it is aged and used makes this cello a rare beauty.

The annual rings of the front board of spruce are very regular and medium wide. The proportional curvature of front and back gives elegance to the instrument.

The dimensions of this (4/4) cello:

  • upper width 34,5 cm
  • narrowest width 24,3 cm
  • bottom width 44 cm
  • body height (to the heel) 75 cm
  • the scale is 69,5 cm (keel to bridge)
  • the cello fits in an ordinary cello case.

The current setup consists of:

  • Teller ebony tailpiece with integrated fine tuners
  • French cello bridge
  • ebony tuning pegs in the style of Hill & Sons
  • ebony fingerboard
  • Bogaro & Clemente ebony bobbin for tailpiece

String setup

The cello is strung up with Jargar Special on A and Jargar Evoke on the D, G and the C string. The final setup for this instrument can be chosen by the buyer, in the sound optimisation proces where the buyer will be supported by cellist and cello-string-specialist Mirjam Daalmans from the Gallery.

Sergio Scaramelli is a renowned violin maker hailing from Ferrara Italy.

A double bass of his is included in the National Musical Instruments Fund (NMF). Sergio Scaramelli has restored several very important ancient instruments because of his specific knowledge.

This builder uses models by Ettore Soffriti and Anselmo Gotti, among others, for his cellos, models that few violin makers use but have very good sound characteristics .

Scaramelli has access to a stock of beautiful timbers of old age, giving his instruments a special tonal character.
