This cello is built by contemporary Italian luthier Sergio Scaramelli in Ferrara, Italy in 2019.

Built after the model of Ettore Soffriti, this cello is characterized by a rich and warm sound. It is made of tonewood that has riped over 30 years.

The oil-based lacquer gives a brilliant golden yellow sheen to the sound wood. The maple wood for the ribs and back is broadly flamed. The annual rings of the front board are very regular and medium wide. The curve of the front and back gives this instrument its elegance.

The dimensions of this (4/4) cello:

  • upper width 34,5 cm
  • narrowest width 25 cm
  • bottom width 44 cm
  • body height (to the heel) 75 cm
  • the scale is 69,3 cm (keel to bridge)
  • the cello fits in an ordinary cello case.

The current setup consists of:

  • French bridge
  • Teller ebony tailpiece
  • ebony fingerboard
  • ebony Hill-model tuning pegs with boxwood rings and dots
  • Bogaro & Clemente ebony bobbin for tailpin

String setup

The cello is strung up with Jargar Evoke on A, Thomastik Versum Soloist on the D and G and Jargar Evoke on the C string. The final setup for this instrument can be chosen by the buyer, in the sound optimisation proces where the buyer will be supported by cellist and cello-string-specialist Mirjam Daalmans from the Gallery.

Sergio Scaramelli is a renowned violin maker hailing from Ferrara Italy.

A double bass of his is included in the National Musical Instruments Fund (NMF). Sergio Scaramelli has restored several very important ancient instruments because of his specific knowledge.

This builder uses models by Ettore Soffriti and Anselmo Gotti, among others, for his cellos, models that few violin makers use but have very good sound characteristics .

Scaramelli has access to a stock of beautiful timbers of old age, giving his instruments a special tonal character.
