Salomon

SALOMON is one of the most famous violin makers and dealer of his period known as “Ecole Vieux Paris (Old Paris School). His cellos were particularly appreciated by the musicians of his time. So this is truly something special!

The cello is build from quality tonewoods (spruce and maple) in a pale golden-brown finish. It has a lot of character, both in sound as in its vintage looks. It is build in 271 years ago, so that is not a surprise.


The dimensions of this (4/4) cello:

  • upper width 34.5 cm
  • narrowest width 23,3 cm
  • bottom width 44,2 cm
  • body height (to the heel) 76 cm
  • the scale is 69 cm (keel to bridge)
  • the cello fits in an ordinary cello case.

The current setup consists of:

  • The fingerboard is made of good quality ebony.
  • Belgian bridge with stamp ‘#’.
  • Akustikus tailpiece with finetuners
  • Pallisander tuning pegs (with small diamonds) in the headstock
  • The string set consists of Thomastik Peter Infeld on the A and D and Thomastik Rondo on the G and Thomastik Peter Infeld on the C string.

Established in Paris on the rue de Grenelle Saint Honoré at the sign ‘Sainte-Cécile’. Married Barbe Deshaies, the widow of J. Ouvrard in 1748. Thereafter adopted the name ‘Jean-Baptiste Deshayes’, and worked in the old Ouvrard shop in place de l’École.

He was appointed Master of the violin makers guild in 1760. Salomon was a highly successful luthier who has build all sorts of musical instruments.
